What VR Means for Advertising

Innovative marketers and creatives take notice of this expert session. So far, VR ads are popular mainly within the tech industry, but they have also gained notable interest from car brands, with Audi, Jaguar and Volvo all releasing VR ads.

Successful VR advertising requires a specific understanding of the genre, and brands can mistakenly fall into a mindset that also applies to social media advertising – that a campaign can be pushed across all platforms without addressing the peculiar characteristics of each.

CapitolaVR, Hollands NR1 Virtual Reality agency based in Amsterdam talks about The Doritos VR Battle.  The game was originally made with the goal of creating a viral video for Doritos and claim the gaming domain. The game was specifically made to have 2 famous Dutch YouTubers gaming against each other. The video was such a succes that we decided together with Doritos to develop it further as a standalone SteamVR, Cardboard and GearVR version. The extended version for Steam will be available on the Steam store . The Cardboard and GearVR versions are short versions of the game and will be available for free through the iOS App store, the Google Play store and the Oculus Store for Gear VR.

Besides CapitolaVR, Media Monks will present a great 360 campaign. A panel with industry experts on advertising, ROI and VR will follow because successful VR advertising requires a specific understanding of the genre, and brands can mistakenly fall into a mindset that also applies to social media advertising – that a campaign can be pushed across all platforms without addressing the peculiar characteristics of each.

Another controversy surrounds the idea that VR is or should be an escape from everyday reality, and advertising in this environment would ruin the experience. Pressure exists for brands to successfully tell an engaging story through their ads.
