Dr Thomas Oberender was born in 1966, studied Theatre Studies and Scenic Writing in Berlin and worked as a freelance playwright, critic, essayist and publicist. Co-founder of the writers’ theatre association “Theater neuen Typs” (TNT) in Berlin in 1997. Obtained a PhD with a dissertation on Botho Strauß. Worked as head dramaturg at Schauspielhaus Bochum. Developed the literary festival “Wiedererrichtung des Himmels” for the festival Ruhrtriennale, together with Gerard Mortier, followed by the literary festival “Schule der Romantik”. Co-director at Schauspielhaus Zürich until 2005/06, then Head of Theatre at Salzburger Festspiele until 2011. Developed the event series “Die Erfindung der Freiheit” for the Cultural Capital RUHR 2010. Since 2012, he has been director of Berliner Festspiele and Artistic Director of the programme series “Immersion”. Book publications: “Leben auf Probe” (Hanser, 2009), “Haupteingang oder Nebeneingang” (Suhrkamp, 2015).
