This research deals with how music is composed for a 360° medium such as Virtual Reality using various composition techniques, addressing the problem: what role can music for visual media have today?
Music is an art-form in its own right and is therefore very different to sound design, foley and dialogue. In visual media, music is often being used to enhance the emotions of the visual content. But despite viewing visual content in 360° or any other form, music is still being played in stereo or surround sound, while sound design and foley usually use spatial audio. The reason for this is that music follows a linear form, going from a set start to an end. Therefore, my focus is to create non-linear music content for VR that can be spatial and adapt depending on the story outcome and interactions.
